Staszak proved to be something less than the hype had promised, but Adam Oates was much, much more. He entered the NHL in 1985 in Detroit, signed by the Wings along with more highly-celebrated Ray Staszak in a double signing of the most sought-after college free agents, the Justin Schultz’ of their day. That had hardly been a problem in Oates’ earlier days. Still, Oiler fans saw glimpses of the player that had been, even as their squad didn’t have a top notch finisher to convert his occasional sweet passes. The latest Hockey Hall of Famer with connections to the Oil drop made his fame and scored his points elsewhere before arriving in Edmonton to play out the string in his final season of 2003-04.
